"I have said that the soul is not more than the body,

Practice of the Month

"[During my practice] I learned how difficult it is for me to allow agitation and discomfort. I still have yet to be able to sit through agitation. Now that I recognize the agitation a little more, I have something concrete to work with when it arises in other situations. The pattern of eating to cover up the agitation is so ingrained that I am almost unconscious of this agitation that probably occurs rather frequently." --Michelle Hart, Dancemeditation teacher, film maker, Los Angeles, CA

I begin this month's practice with Michelle's self observation as a way to remind us all that a central challenge in any meditation practice is the encounter with anxiety, or as Michelle names it "agitation and discomfort." Whenever we slow down to notice ourselves we will uncover what we have been avoiding. What is so beautiful here is that, though she is noticing her agitation during movement practice, she consciously connects the use of eating to cover over the same sensation of agitation. Somatic practices like the ones we've been including in this enews are places to deepen sensation and it is in the sensation of our bodies that we can recognize pervasive underlying patterns ripe for healing.

I would like to tie this to the Fact of the Month (below) by saying that our underlying agitation or anxiety is stressful and contributes to erosion of immune function. Feeling and sitting through the anxiety, rather than repressing it, is at first unpleasant. But it is this detoxification and the resulting integration that lowers overall stress.

Practice:

This is a simply practice. As you work, stay with the sensation of your movement. Use easy-going soothing music for this. Lying on the floor on a soft mat, relax and connect to your breath. Close your eyes. Get a sense of your whole body, all the parts, resting on the floor. As you lie on the floor feel that your are relaxed and released but that your body is suspended in fluid. It is supported all around. Begin to move staying horizontal and continue this sense of being supported in fluid. Everything is relaxed but not completely dropped into the floor. Stay with this for 20 minutes. It will deepen and smooth out. See what sensations arise as you work.

Fact of the Month

"80 percent of our body's immune cells are in the mucosal surfaces, such as vagina, urethra, cervix, and bladder. The function of these cells is highly influenced by stress hormones such as cortisol…Any perception of invasion of one's emotional life can result in increased permeability of one's immune system boundary both on the surface areas of the body and internally."
--Christiane Northrup, M.D. Women's bodies, Women's Wisdom

Testimonials of the Month

"I feel peaceful, calm, intentional, connected. I really enjoyed working with my interior, with small movements, all the parts that make me whole. I've been craving the bodily connection that pulls me into myself and inspires all of other areas of my life.
I loved the whirling! Using movement to move into trance was wonderful and powerful. I felt like I was dancing inside of a kaleidoscope. After the whirling my mind felt busy, a lot of processing going on…reflection, new ways of looking at old ideas.
I will remember to move with intention, taking my time if I need it. I will use these ideas in my art."

-- Shannon Mulkey, artist, Marietta, GA

"My body is in "spiritual heaven"-- calm in joy. My mind is wanting to experience more of the dance "meditation". My emotional state is peaceful, joyful. I am removed from my stress of everyday weekly living. I love dance. My background is ballet and ballroom, contra, Cajun, creative/interpretative, and good-old rock n' roll free style. I do hand dancing and did not realize that others also do it. I was enthralled by what we did. I'm moved to get dance back into my daily loving and being."
-- Gana VanLaanen, Atlanta, GA
