The individual disappears behind the archetype, the divine. The mystical and erotic become one… "…By hiding and showing herself again, appearing and disappearing, deducing life and retreating, by being flirtatious and then proud again, erotic and then cheerful, indifferent and distant, exciting and shy as a child, she frees herself from external forms and abandons herself to the nature of things. She enters the world of unity. That is mystical Eros." -- Rosina-Fawzia Al-Rawi, Grandmother's Secrets: The Ancient Rituals and Healing Power of Belly Dancing =================== Course: MOVING IN SENSATION * Winter/Spring Series CAPE COD, MA 2/21 * 3/20 * 4/24 * 5/15 11am - 2pm Mary French Studio, Rte. 28A & County Rd., Cataumet, MA Spinal wave motion, breath, released stretching & explorational motion to increase sensation and enjoyment of your movement. What is a veil? It is a piece of light silk fabric. It is a partner, a shape-shifter, a drawing instrument, a covering, a shroud, a sensory trigger, a metaphor for a human condition. It is important for the exercise here that the veil be silk chiffon or china silk, 5 mm (that stands for mummy, the measurement of weight), 45 inches wide and 3 to 3 3/4 in length. The longer the veil the more to contend with. Begin with the veil draped along the front of your body like a cloak. It will rest on your shoulders and hang down to upper thigh. Drape it so that the centerline of the fabric lines up with the centerline of your body. Let the silk cover your shoulders and arms, feeling how it feels on your skin. Now, without grasping the fabric with your fingers, move with the veil any way you can using your body to keep the veil from falling to the ground. Never hold it with your fingers; always use your body's motion to move the veil. This exercise activates your whole body rather than only hands and arms. The sensation of the fabric is very sensuous. =================== Music Recommendations For a nice juicy boogie: Hossam Ramzy's "Eternal Egpyt" (Also "Gamal Rohani" & "Source of Fire") =================== Testimonials of the Month From 'Painting the Wind: Mysticism in the Veil' workshop in Charlottesville, VA, 1/2004 *** "After the workshop I feel like my body has been tuned. I feel peaceful mind and loving heart. I feel connected to the others here. I never danced with a veil before. I love the idea of it giving us access to divinity and protecting us at the same time. I came here without expectations and worried about my level of skill. Belly, hips and shoulders tend to stay tight for me. It was great to let go. I'll very likely start draping myself more…it reminds me that love and care for self makes us loving toward others. Dunya is an amazing and wonderful combination of strong and dramatic, selfless and soft. I hope to be there someday, and it was a fulfilling thing to see a model." -- Margaret McColley French Teacher and Graduate Student, Charlottesville, VA (I am writing on French women travelers who were assimilated into Islam and Buddhism in Algeria and Tibet.) *** "My body feels tight yet loose. My mind is calm though I'm not used to meditation. The concept of using the veil as a wild animal, a spurned lover, opened new creative possibilities. I need to develop more emotion in my dance. I plan to continue exploring more emotion while dancing, alternating between acknowledging the audience and internalizing the dance." -- Kreela Moore Visitor Services, Monticello, Keswick, VA *** "I feel refreshed yet calmed throughout my mind and body. My emotions are stable since I was focusing on myself and forgetting all distractions. I felt the connection between myself and the veil, realizing its symbolic nature. I will use it in personal practice and also a sort of meditation. I was surprised by my lack of insecurity from being surrounded with the compassion of all the women in the room." -- Kirby Taylor Student, Charlottesville, VA =================== And that is the end of our newsletter.
