Quote of the Month

" 'Niwa' [the title of her life-long dance project] means a forgotten garden, very tiny, very Japanese. I wanted to see my life from the perspective of a woman seated in a garden, watching it bloom and wither. It is not art that I aspire to, but love."
--Muteki-sha, Butoh dancer

Practice of the Month

Spine's Progress

This exercise integrates the spine and supports organ function through gentle nervous system stimulation. It may promote dreaming or early body memory.

In a settled, clean, undisturbed room, do the sequence slowly at a relaxed pace. It has a watery, oceanic quality. Linger in the sensations, the feelings, the motions. Use easy-going, warm music. Lie on a well-cushioned but solid surface so the ground is there for you.

1. In spinal twist on the floor, rest and breathe. Come to center, rest and breathe. Twist to the other side, rest and breathe. Then center, rest and breathe.
2. 2. Twist right leg over the left, and lower both legs to the floor over to the left. Arms open on floor spread eagle.
3. Begin in the sacrum with up and down motions. That is, up and down relative to what would be an upright spinal posture, one hip rising towards one shoulder then alternating the other hip towards the other shoulder. Of course these motions are very, very small so it is a little wiggle feeling.
4. Sacrum forward and back. That is, the pelvis rocking forward in space and back. Again, very tiny. Until now the movement has centered in the pelvis. Continue on with the rocking or wiggling motions until the occiput (the base of the skull) can respond in a released rocking. 5. Begin a circling motion in the direction that feels most organic. Which direction is it? Clockwise or counterclockwise? The movement is in the pelvis but let the head follow the impulse and rock in response to the pelvic motion. Small range of motion. Non-urgent.
6. Gradually let the circular motion spiral up the spine, vertebrae by vertebrae, like a very gentle scouring. Some areas will be more resistant than others. In the upper back the spread eagle posture is very different than the lower spine's twist from the crossed-over twined legs. Giver yourself 7 to 10 minutes to complete the progression up the length of the spine. No rush.
7. Once you have progressed all the way up the spine, stop your movement. Rest and breathe in the twist. Then, remaining in the twist, draw your breath and energy from the coccyx straight up the spine into the head and forehead.
8. Return to center, rest and breathe.
9. Go to the other side and repeat the entire sequence. When you get to the rotation do you find the same direction organic? Or do you go in the opposite direction? Just notice and go with what draws you.

Testimonials of the Month

Hi Dunya, I auditioned for the Harvard-Radcliffe Modern Dance Company recently, and they accepted me! This accomplishment is no small feat for a fellow who still must grapple with 19 years of negative conditioning with the idea that he couldn't dance. I can't thank you enough for opening up this new world to me -- and you opened it in such a non-restrictive way. I first learned to feel, then I learned to dance; for many westerners, the opposite is true.

Duncan Smith Rohberg, Harvard undergraduate
