Seminar: GAZING IN: Roots of Stambali
October 1st 1-4pm
Ancient Arts Studio
590 Berkley St.
Berkley, MA

We’ll turn our view inward to part the interior veil covering hips and spine. Breathing and gentle vibration, as well as exploration of rhythm and sensation in our dance, can dissolve the blocks that tighten our viscera and constrict our connection to the pelvis. This is the root of Stambali, the trance dance women have used for centuries in the Middle East to heal themselves.
Please bring an exercise mat, a veil and a hip scarf.

$35 at door; $28 by 9/21

Practice of the Month

Move and write.

Close your eyes and move for 20 minutes. (Move any way you feel to any music you wish, or to silence.) Rest for 5 minutes. Write for 20 minutes. Move for 10 more minutes and rest.

If you do this practice with a friend, you can read back what you wrote to one another to end the session. Feel free to adjust any of the timings, but beginning with 20 minutes of movement is highly recommended.

Contemplations of Retreat

“The retreat helped me connect with my spirit, to more easily understand, nurture and strengthen that aspect of myself. This is one of the \"newer\" things for me, the increased clarity in this area. I have experienced support and healing psychologically with counseling, and in the physical/emotional body with the Rosen Method, and craniosacral therapy. This spring my counselor said to me she thought my spirit had been wounded due to a deep hurt at a young age. I kind of understood what she meant but didn\'t know how I would address this aspect of myself. DM has helped me to access and nurture my spirit. That is huge for me, and I am very grateful! I really enjoy the focus on the experience of spirit/God with support for the process, but not a structure which restricts it. I also like the lack of emphasis on \"form\" for God, since I have given up naming or relating to that. The care and respect that you showed individuals varying within the group is deeply appreciated. My being is vulnerable at at time like that, as I know others are. Its great to feel and see that space honored sensitively, even though I imagine at times it\'s tiring. It\'s good training to see, for life, teaching, whatever. All of us humans are just one big group on this ball together; we\'re all different, maybe we\'ll learn to live together.
I liked the intensity of the work: the longer chants, practices, meditations. I was tired and really needed the rest after. My brain hurt, and I couldn\'t think. I was able to when I left, though I still felt the need for rest. I feel able to reach a quiet space inside myself more easily.”
