Quote of the Month

"My body -- what is it, who is it? I shiver. I feel cold. Why can't I remember being warm? My body can't recall how it felt twelve hours ago, yet somewhere in its cells it holds every part of my life, even things my mind cannot remember."
--Dunya Dianne McPherson, from In Search of my Body

Fluid Yoga, Dancemeditation, Spiritual Bellydance, Sufi Healing

The workshop will traverse a variety of dance territories: lush, serene moving yoga to open your body & center attention; contemplative mudra dances; the unfolding of slumbering pelvis and spine into detailed, sensuous vibration; spacious, releasing exploration of movement to expand your body’s resonance with universal forms. We’ll turn particular attention to experiencing the sensuality of our dance through connection to our organs and energetic lines of motions. Elegant embodiment & Development in the Sufi Subtle. Also we’ll make a foray into zaar (dance catharsis) if the group intention can hold and provide this.
All periods of action are intertwined with deep resting.
Immersion. Celebration. Beauty.

Practice of the Month

Summer for most people is a time when we can stretch more deeply in the warmth. It can also feel lively in a relaxed way since we are not fighting against the contraction of cold weather. I suggest doing what feels pleasurable and light, more outward, enlivening and restorative rather than deeply investigative practices. If you live in the southern hemisphere you will obviously be on the opposite side of this idea. Save this enews for your summer months.

Practice:

A simple focus on circles.

Begin lying down or sitting or standing -- which ever feels best. Bring your attention to your breath. Align it with the pulse of the music. Begin moving with the awareness of your breath, letting go of unnecessary tensions. Stick with this for a short while since the body needs time to let go. After a while begin drawing circles with the body part that most comes into your awareness. Hips or hands of shoulders. Stay with circular motion in that body part for a bit until it establishes a nice groove. You can then gradually let the motion migrate to other areas. The motion can be circles or curves or figure eights. Relax into this for 20 minutes or so. Don't push or drive it. See if the movement can take off on its own.

This is a simple, pleasurable practice for the body and mind.

Music Recommendation

Buddha Mar VI two CD set

A great collections mixed to make an undisturbed seamless flow facilitating meditative trance movement. Both CD's are good. #2 pumps more than #1. Both are smooth.

Testimonial of the Month

Retreat:

Before I arrived at the retreat, I made it a point to let go of any expectations of what I wanted to happen during an eight day period of DanceMeditation. After a few routine announcements, my teacher, Dunya, sat crossed legged in front of the class ready to begin. "Exhale down" she instructed as she bent down from the waist towards the floor. And thus began my eight day journey of Dancemeditation which included: fluid yoga, chanting, Sufi whirling, Spiritual Bellydancing, healthy eating, and napping, spending time alone in nature, writing, and just good old plain relaxing.

Dunya is a beautiful soul with an amazing body and eyes that reflect inner peace, serenity, and tranquility. She has been facilitating this type body movement for many years which makes her a knowledgeable and experienced teacher. I was thrilled and excited to be there and felt great appreciation and admiration for her.

Dunya’s DanceMeditation retreat helped me release bottled-up anger I had stored inside for many, many years. By not having had any expectations of what I wanted to happen during this retreat I opened myself up to heal any part of me that needed to be healed at that time. I am thankful to Dunya for her warmth, strength, and support during the entire retreat.

Now that the retreat is over, I am re-committed to take excellent care of myself by making movement a part of my meditation practice, eating healthy foods that replenish and nourish my body, and by taking time to laugh, dance and play. I highly recommend Dunya’s Dancemeditation retreats to anyone with the desire to love themselves first and most before anyone else in their lives by taking excellent care of themselves, especially to those that have never even thought of this being possible.
