For 20 minutes move so that you feel no pain. Pain is an interesting barometer -- a shifting, mutable proprioceptive marker. Enjoy using it a conscious gauge in your practice and notice how your range of movement shifts as you work. =================== Fact of the Month Concerning pain: "The words we choose when describing "heartache" or "hurt" feelings may be more accurate than previously believed. According to a recent UCLA study, emotional distress activates one of the same parts of the brain as physical pain. Researchers induced feelings of social rejection in 13 subjects by setting up a computer game in which participants felt they were being left out by the other players. When the scientists examined their brains using MRI, they found that stronger feelings of rejection resulted in more activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, a part of the brain that registers physical pain. Naomi Eisenberger, a doctoral student at UCLA and the study's lead author, believes the similarities between emotional and physical pain may have had evolutionary benefits. If emotional pain is great enough, she says, we seek to alleviate it by making strong bonds with people. Our desire to be part of a group and avoid exclusion, Eisenberger says, "has been selected over time to promote our survival as a species - Michelle Stacey, Oprah Magazine. Not one bad cut! =================== Testimonials of the Month "The workshop provided a gentle yet intentional space for unraveling and revealing. Many things opened for me - the whirling, the newness in things I've done before. My spine feels rubbery like a wrung out rag, I'm super hungry. My eyes feel like they are spinning back past my brain (from the whirling) picking up little bits of image and thought each time they pass. I feel satisfied, peaceful and energized. I found the spiraling up the spine and the whirling to be excitingly introspective-- like different dimensions. Thanks for teaching. I love working/ dancing with you." Heather Stalcup Artist/designer Smyrna, GA "My body feels well-used -- as if I have done something worthwhile and worthy of it -- things I have chosen not to be aware of for too long. I have hope and quiet joy in my heart. Witness dancing, partners dancing and most importantly feeling the music with my eyes closed have been wonderful new experiences. These concepts and freedoms will move my learning and performing to a deeper level. I feel my power as a dancer. Thank you for helping me free myself." Kimberly Hays, writer, grantwriter Decatur, GA "I really liked the idea of the arms starting in the spine -- the fascia (I'm just beginning to learn about fascia) -- lots of food for thought from that statement. I also liked the idea of moving in ways that don’t hurt. I tend to enjoy going right over my edge, sometimes. So, it gave my mind the idea that I could go easy." -- Shannon P.
