Quote of the Month

Dancemeditation Is This Ocean

“Out of the deep blue an incoming curl hisses over a lip of red-umber eel grass, then sucks back, chewing on barnacles and dragging pebbles, the sound like a bony roll of ten thousand dice. The sea has been beachcombing, digesting the shore, and thirty feet out under a watery veil, makes a milky sand bar of its findings. The bar swoons and stirs at every tidal tug. Insistent caress. Dancemeditation is this ocean: a ceaseless roil across the gravel of pain, wearing it down, until we are only pure fluid response to Cosmic Breath.”

Autumn Practice

Sufi Mudra 1

   1. Sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes. Bring your attention to your breathing. It may help to move gently from your breath for a short while, tethering your attention to the breath and the movement.
   2. Draw your focus to your heart center. Be aware of its radiant quality as you move. Now let the energy from the heart center emanate out through the chest, shoulders, along the inside of the upper arm, along the inside of the lower arm. Feel this current. It may be warm or hot. It may feel like a liquid or an electrified liquid. Continue with this and include the palm of the hand in your sphere of awareness. As you move the palms grow warmer and fuller. Continue to bring your attention to this stream of energy surging through the heart center and along the inner arms and palms.
   3. Burrow your attention inward, inside the energetic stream. Let this stream carry your hands in space, lift the elbows and float the torso as if, like a hawk, you are aloft. Let the energy shape the motion while your awareness both submerges more deeply and becomes more acute.

Testimonials of the Month

“Reflections I've had recently have brought me to the realization that what I began with you last October really became a centerpiece and vital part of my devotional/spiritual life.  After a departure over the last number of years from a dogma-based religion to a fully inner/abstracted or mystical path, as well as taking leave of the community related to those prior beliefs, I found it such a welcome home to come into the body-based practice that you teach.  Since the summer "break" from this work, I have really discovered my need and desire to continue this centering practice.
One memory that often re-surfaces in my mind is from the spring intensive training. I am looking out into the afternoon square of light coming in through the window, my face upturned, body undulating with the breath-chant "fatih."  It is this memory that most closely attunes me with a sense of Truth.  It was breathing, acting, moving with Truth in those moments.”

“Thank you so much for such a wonderful spiritual dance experience. I had no expectations for your class nor did I have any idea what Spiritual Bellydance was. I came with an open mind - body - soul & heart and I had the most invigorating sensual feeling ever. This was my first time taking a dance class as an adult and it was a phenomenal freeing body experience for me. I look forward to my future classes!
Dunya - you are truly blessed with The Gift of Dance. I so admired watching you dance with such grace - passion & sheer feminine elegance. I am very happy to have found your website.”
