Ripples: Dance Music Theater

Ripples, a dance-music-theater piece. Conception Eugenie Kuffler. With Dunya McPherson, Gloria McLean and Eugenie Kuffler. Premier August 22, 2025, outside & inside of the Woods Hole Community Hall, Massachusetts.

Ripples is the wordless story of Ondine, the local mermaid who nightly clashes her cymbals and sounds her conch on Red Ledge, a pile of rocks in the Woods Hole Passage, of the Sea Widow who obsessively consults the seaweed and summons an unfathomable ocean power at the end of a dock and of The Dancer Who Came to the Show.

It is a piece is about the interpenetration of outside and inside, beginning behind the old communal hall on the channel leading from an inner harbor to Vineyard Sound and continuing inside where the ferry horn, the murmur and lights of the village enter through the open windows of the hall, creating an ambiguity between here and there, between real and unreal.

The ripples are those of the wind on the water and of the water on the sand, a manifestation of the transmission of energy which served as a model for a collaboration between the 3 artists. Each brought a distinct universe, marked their territory delineated by the lights, lights which, at the end begin to improvise with intensity, orientation, volume and tempo accompanying and leading the dancers from their solos to a fluid infinity dance.
